Understanding substitute fielders in PlayHQ
⚠️ Important: This feature is currently available to a limited beta group. Details may change before general release.
When one of your named players is unavailable during a game, a substitute fielder can take the field in their place. PlayHQ lets you name a sub fielder in your line-up, so any catches or run-outs they take are credited to them.
A sub fielder can only be given fielding statistics. They can't bat or bowl, and the game isn't added to their season or career match totals. This means filling in for an afternoon won't count as a match played, or against their finals eligibility.
Sub fielders appear on the scorecard with a (sub) label next to their name, for example: c Telford (sub) b Harris.
Turning on sub fielders for a grade
Before teams can add a sub fielder, an administrator needs to turn on the Sub fielders setting for the grade. The setting only appears for cricket grades and is off by default for all new and existing grades.
-
Open the grade settings
Navigate to the grade's settings in the Admin Portal and open the Game section.
-
Turn on sub fielders
In the Line ups section, toggle 'Sub fielders' to ON. The helper text reads: Let teams add substitute fielders to their line-up. Sub fielders can field but can't bat or bowl, and the game won't count towards their matches played.
Once on, sub fielders can be added for games in that grade in eScoring, in Admin Portal line-ups before and after the game, and in My Teams on the PlayHQ website and app. When the setting is off, the option to add a sub fielder is hidden in all of those places.
💡 Tip: Turning the setting off won't affect completed games. Sub fielders already recorded in completed games, and their statistics, stay as they are.

Recording fielding by a sub fielder during the game
When you record a catch or run-out, select the sub fielder from the fielder list as you would any other player. They're shown with (sub) next to their name. Sub fielders can't be selected to bat or bowl.
💡 Tip: You can add sub fielders at any time. If someone takes the field part way through the game, add them as a sub fielder from the line-up section.

Who can be added as a sub fielder?
Any participant registered to the same club.
Can a sub fielder bat or bowl?
No. A sub fielder can only be credited with fielding statistics. If they need to bat or bowl, convert them to a full player first.
