Overview
Report Builder has had a substantial upgrade. It looks different and works differently to the tool you're used to, but unlocks some powerful new functionality you've been asking for.
You can now ask a question in plain English and get a real answer back, build and share complete dashboards rather than single charts, report on statistics at the individual game level for the first time, and bring your own data in alongside your PlayHQ data. This article gives you the full picture of what's new, what happened to your existing reports, and where to go to learn the new tool.
The four big upgrades
1. Ask, don't build
The single biggest change is the assistant. Previously, the built-in AI could only handle small lookups. It's now a genuinely capable analyst: ask it a question about your organisation's data in plain language — no need to know field names, dataset names, or how the data is structured — and it will work out how to answer it. For most questions, this should be the first thing you try. See Chatting with the AI.
2. New statistics datasets
You can now report on game-level statistics, not just career-level totals. That means you can track a participant's statistics within a single season and across multiple seasons, and start building genuinely granular insight into your talent pipeline — not just "how many games has this person played," but how they performed, season over season.
3. A much more powerful report builder
Beyond the assistant, the manual builder itself is significantly more capable: more visualisation types, more customisation, and the flexibility to assemble complete dashboards, schedule them, and work in a built-in spreadsheet with Excel-style formulas. It's a little more to learn than the old tool — we think the extra capability is worth it. See Building a report.
4. Bring your own data
You can now upload your own datasets — anything outside PlayHQ — and analyse them using the same report builder tools.
💡 Tip: Uploaded data sits alongside your PlayHQ data, not joined into it
You can view your own data and your PlayHQ data side by side, but you can't yet combine them into a single report.
How the old tool maps to the new one
| Old Report Builder | Report Builder 2.0 |
|---|---|
| Manual, field-by-field builder only; built-in AI limited to small lookups | Assistant answers full analytical questions in plain language; manual builder still available for bespoke needs |
| Individual charts only — exported and rebuilt into a dashboard elsewhere | Native dashboards: build, save, share, schedule and download without leaving PlayHQ |
| Career-level statistics only | Career-level and game-level statistics, trackable within and across seasons |
| Custom registration questions not reportable | Custom registration questions are reportable |
| Export to CSV, then finish analysis in Excel | Built-in spreadsheet with Excel-style formulas and calculated fields |
| PlayHQ data only | PlayHQ data plus your own uploaded datasets, viewed alongside one another |
| Pre-built reports lived in their own area | All pre-built reports rebuilt and available in the Reports Hub from day one |
| Your own saved reports | Recently-used saved reports migrated automatically; older ones can be requested back — see below |
What happened to your old reports
Two things happened, and they're worth separating clearly:
- All pre-built reports have been rebuilt and are available in the Reports Hub from day one — nothing to do on your part.
- Your own saved reports: if you'd used a saved report recently, it came across automatically.
⚠️ Important: Not every saved report migrated automatically
If you had a saved report you hadn't opened in a while and can't find it now, that's expected — contact Support and we can bring it back for you.
Where to go next
Not sure which article you need?
- Have a question, or want to build something but don't know exactly what yet? Start with Chatting with the AI.
- Know exactly what you want to build from scratch? Go to Building a report.
- Looking for a report you or a colleague already saved, or one of the reports you used before this change? See The Reports Hub.
Frequently asked questions
What permissions do I need to use Report Builder 2.0?
You need AnalyticsHQ access on your Organisation Administrator account. If you're not sure whether you have this, contact your organisation's primary administrator or contact Support.
Does this change what data I have access to?
No — it's the same underlying data. What's changed is the tool you use to work with it, plus the new statistics datasets and custom-question reporting described above.
I can't find a report I used to have — what do I do?
See "What happened to your old reports" above, and contact Support if you need an older report restored.
Where do I start if I'm not sure what I need?
Start with the assistant — see Chatting with the AI. It's the fastest way to get an answer or build something, even if you're not sure exactly what you're looking for.
Can I combine my own uploaded data with my PlayHQ data in one report?
Not yet. Uploaded data is viewed alongside your PlayHQ data rather than joined into it.
