Overview
AFL eScoring lets a scorer record goals, behinds and super goals in real time from a phone or tablet, so the scorecard and the ladder update as the game is played rather than being entered by hand afterwards.
Every score can be attributed either to an individual player or to the team as a whole. Attributing to a player is what drives individual goalkicking statistics, so it's worth doing wherever the scorer knows who kicked it. Team attribution exists for rushed behinds and for the moments where the scorer genuinely doesn't know.
Before a club can score a game, the association must first switch eScoring on for the relevant competition grades.
💡 Tip: New to e-scoring?
Try it out in our Demo E-scoring environment before your first live match — record events all without affecting real match data.
1. Ensuring eScoring is activated
eScoring is controlled by the Allow clubs to enter scores via electronic scoring setting, which only Association Administrators can change.
Tip: Club Administrators cannot see or change this setting. If scoring is unavailable for a game, the association is the first place to check.
-
Go to Competition Management
Log in to the Admin Portal and go to Competition Management.
-
Select the competition
Select the competition you want to update.
-
Open Settings
Select Settings from the competition menu.
-
Open Grade Defaults
Select Grade Defaults under the Settings menu.
-
Turn on electronic scoring
Scroll to General Settings and toggle Allow clubs to enter scores via electronic scoring to ON.
Once enabled, eligible scorers can record scores for games in that grade.
Super goals
Super goals are off by default. They only appear as a scoring option if the league has activated them for the competition, and the value awarded varies by competition. Confirm with your league before the season starts whether super goals are in use and what they're worth.
2. Accessing the scoring application
There are two ways to get into the scoring application.
Web browser
Go to score.playhq.com and log in, then select the game you want to score.
PlayHQ app
Eligible scorers can open scoring directly from the Game Centre in the relevant PlayHQ app. A Score Game button appears when the game is scheduled to start within the next hour, or is pending or in progress, and it stays visible for up to 24 hours after the scheduled start time.
To score through the app, you must be eligible to eScore, be affiliated with the organisation scoring the game, and have permission from the association at both competition and grade level. Scoring inside the app works the same way as the mobile browser, with two differences: you can't exit the game from within the scoring platform, and submitting the result closes scoring and returns you to the Game Centre.
3. AFL scoring values
| Scenario | Score to apply |
|---|---|
| The player kicks a super goal | 9 or 10, depending on the competition |
| The player kicks a goal | 6 |
| The player kicks a behind | 1 |
| A rushed behind, or a score with no known scorer | 1, recorded against the team rather than a player |
Important: Super goals only appear if your league has turned them on
If you expect to see a super goal option and it's missing, contact your league rather than recording it as a goal — recording it as a goal will understate the correct score.
4. Recording a score against a player
Scores can be recorded in either order, whichever suits the scorer.
Player first
- Select the player's name from the team list.
- Select the appropriate score: super goal, goal or behind.
Score first
- Select the score: super goal, goal or behind.
- Select the player's name, or the team name.
Either way, the player's individual total and the team's total increase immediately and a confirmation message is displayed.
5. Recording a score against a team
Rushed behinds have no individual scorer, and there will be moments in a busy forward line where the scorer can't identify who kicked it. In both cases, record the score against the team.
The team name sits above the list of players. Select the team name in exactly the same way you'd select a player, either before or after selecting the score.
The team total updates and the score counts towards the result as normal. No individual goalkicking statistic is created.
Tip: Attribute to a player wherever you reasonably can. Team-attributed scores are correct for rushed behinds, but using them as a catch-all hollows out the goalkicking statistics that participants see in the app.
6. Correcting a score recorded in error
Important: Correct errors as soon as you notice them
Scores are pushed live to the app and, where a league uses the live scoreboard integration, to the ground scoreboard as well — so a wrong score is visible to spectators immediately.
Scores recorded by mistake, whether against the wrong player or the wrong team, are corrected by removing the event from the event log. Removing an event reverses both the team score and any individual statistic attached to it.
7. Players who do not appear on the device
Only players allocated to a team, or added to the line-up in the Admin Portal, appear in the scoring application.
:warning: Important: Fill-in players cannot be added to AFL eScore games
All players must be registered to the team, or hold a valid season or game permit. This differs from other sports on PlayHQ, where fill-ins can be added during a game.
If a player is missing, the line-up needs correcting in the Admin Portal before their scores can be attributed to them. In the meantime, record the score against the team so the game total stays accurate.

Frequently asked questions
Who can enable eScoring for a competition? Only Association Administrators, via the Allow clubs to enter scores via electronic scoring setting. Club Administrators do not have access to it.
Why can't I see the super goal option? Super goals only appear if the league has activated them for that competition. Contact your league to have them turned on.
How do I record a rushed behind? Select the behind, then select the team name rather than a player. The team name appears above the player list.
I recorded a goal against the wrong player. How do I fix it? Remove the event from the event log, which reverses the score and the individual statistic, then record it again against the correct player.
A player isn't showing in the scoring app. They're not allocated to the team or included in the line-up. Fill-ins cannot be added to AFL eScore games, so the player must be registered to the team or hold a valid season or game permit. Correct the line-up in the Admin Portal.
Can I score from the PlayHQ app rather than a browser? Yes, if you're eligible to eScore and the association has granted permission at competition and grade level. The Score Game button appears in the Game Centre from an hour before the scheduled start.
Do scores appear on the ground scoreboard? They can. PlayHQ's live game webhooks support scoreboard integrations for AFL, so leagues working with an integrated scoreboard provider can display live scores as they're recorded.
