Overview
Netball eScoring allows admins with scoring access to record match events in real time directly from a mobile device or tablet — eliminating paper score sheets and manual data entry after the game.
The app supports recording netball’s standard scoring event — the goal — and assigning it to the shooter who scored it. Player position tracking is built in, including a streamlined interchange flow for moving players between the bench and on-court positions during rolling substitutions and mid-quarter changes.
Before Club Administrators can use eScoring, Association Administrators must enable the feature in the Admin Portal for the relevant competition grades.
Ensure eScoring is activated
In order for eScoring to be enabled, Association Administrators must turn on the Allow clubs to enter scores via electronic scoring setting.
💡 Tip
Club Administrators won’t have access to this setting — only Association Administrators can enable or disable eScoring for a competition.
Follow these steps to activate eScoring for a competition grade:
-
Log in to the Admin Portal and navigate to Competition Management
From the main navigation, select Competition Management. -
Select the competition
Select the competition you wish to update from the list. -
Open Settings
Select Settings from the competition menu. -
Navigate to Grade Defaults
Under the Settings main menu, select Grade Defaults. -
Enable eScoring
Scroll down to General Settings and toggle Allow clubs to enter scores via electronic scoring to ON.
Once enabled, Club Administrators will be able to use Netball eScoring to record match events for games within that grade.
Recording match events
The Netball eScoring app provides a dedicated button for recording goals, making it fast to keep score during a match.
Scoring events overview
| Button | Action |
|---|---|
| Goal | Records a goal directly against the selected shooter (GS or GA) |
| Miss | Records a goal attempt directly against the selected shooter (GS or GA) |
Recording events
Select Goal and then assign it to a player. The player’s statistics and their team’s total score will update immediately, and a confirmation message will be displayed.
If you are not assigning the goal to an individual player, select I don’t know and the goal will be added to the overall team count.
Managing player positions and interchange
Netball eScoring tracks the position each player is playing on court (GS, GA, WA, C, WD, GD, GK) as well as players on the bench (INT), and keeps a running history of position changes throughout the match.
Making a substitution (interchange)
Previously, swapping a player required removing the on-court player and then separately adding a bench player to that position — a two-step process that added friction during fast-paced, rolling substitutions.
The updated interchange flow lets you make the swap in a single action:
- Select the on-court player you want to interchange
-
Select the bench player coming on
Drag and drop the bench player into the vacated position, or use the single-action interchange control to swap the two players directly. -
Confirm the change
A confirmation prompt will display before the interchange is finalised, helping prevent accidental swaps.
⚠️ Important: Undo only reverts the most recent change
If you make a mistake during a substitution, use Undo to revert it immediately. Undo only reverses the last change made — it won’t step back further than one action, so correct mistakes as soon as you notice them.
Position history and Best & Fairest voting
Positions now display in the chronological order they were played during each period (for example, GA → INT), giving umpires an accurate, period-by-period record of each player’s positions for Best & Fairest voting.
Changes made during a period break are attributed to the period the player was actually active in — they won’t incorrectly appear in the next period’s position history.
Viewing positions in the app
Player positions are visible in advanced stats within the PlayHQ mobile app, including a period-by-period position breakdown for each player — giving teams and supporters more transparency into how the match was played.
Frequently asked questions
Who can enable eScoring for a competition?
Only Association Administrators can turn on the Allow clubs to enter scores via electronic scoring setting. Club Administrators do not have access to this setting.
Who can record scores in the Netball HQ app?
Scoring admins can record match events using the Netball HQ app once the Association Administrator has activated eScoring for the relevant competition grade.
What happens if I accidentally record the wrong score?
Recorded events can be removed from the event log. Removing an event will reverse the score and stat totals associated with it.
Can team managers make substitutions instead of scorers?
Not yet. This release focuses on improving the scorer’s interchange experience. Multi-user support that lets team managers and coaches make substitutions directly is planned for a future update.
Will this affect historical match data?
No. All previously recorded match and position data remains unchanged. The improvements apply only to games scored after the update.
Does this apply to sports other than netball?
No. The improved position and interchange flow is specific to netball eScoring. Similar improvements for other sports are being explored based on their individual interchange requirements.
