Overview
Rugby eScoring allows Club Administrators to record match events in real time directly from a mobile device or tablet — eliminating paper score sheets and manual data entry after the game.
The app supports recording all standard Rugby scoring events: tries, conversions, drop goals, and penalty goals. Card management is also built in, with yellow card exclusion timers that sync automatically with the match clock and red card exclusions that prevent further stats being assigned to a player.
Before Club Administrators can use eScoring, Association Administrators must enable the feature in the Admin Portal for the relevant competition grades.
Ensure eScoring is activated
In order for eScoring to be enabled, Association Administrators must turn on the Allow clubs to enter scores via electronic scoring setting.
💡 Tip: Club Administrators won't have access to this setting — only Association Administrators can enable or disable eScoring for a competition.
Follow these steps to activate eScoring for a competition grade:
-
Log in to the Admin Portal and navigate to Competition Management
From the main navigation, select Competition Management.
-
Select the competition
Select the competition you wish to update from the list.
-
Open Settings
Select Settings from the competition menu.
-
Navigate to Grade Defaults
Under the Settings main menu, select Grade Defaults.
-
Enable eScoring
Scroll down to General Settings and toggle Allow clubs to enter scores via electronic scoring to ON.
Once enabled, Club Administrators will be able to use the Rugby eScoring to record match events for games within that grade.
Recording match events
The Rugby eScoring app provides dedicated buttons for each scoring event, making it fast to record events during a match.
Scoring events overview
| Button | Action |
|---|---|
| Try | Records a try directly against a selected player |
| Conversion | Records a conversion directly against a selected player |
| Goal | Opens a sub-menu to select Drop Goal or Penalty Goal |
Recording Events
Select the Event and then assign to a player. The player's statistics and their team's total score will update immediately, and a confirmation message will be displayed.
If you are not assigning events to individuals, select I don't know and the try will be added to the overall team count.
Managing player cards
Yellow cards — temporary exclusion
When a player receives a yellow card, the eScoring app will:
- Automatically mark the player as inactive for the exclusion period (as configured in your competition's game settings)
- Display a countdown timer next to the player's name
- Pause the countdown when the match clock is paused, and resume it when play continues
- Automatically lift the exclusion and restore the player to active status when the timer expires
Red cards — permanent exclusion
Players who receive a red card are permanently excluded from receiving further statistics or scoring events for the remainder of the match.
To record a card:
Select Card, the type of card and assign to the player.
⚠️ Important: Removing an incorrectly assigned yellow card
If a yellow card is assigned to the wrong player, remove the event from the event log. This will immediately cancel the card and remove the countdown timer for that player.
Frequently asked questions
Who can enable eScoring for a competition?
Only Association Administrators can turn on the Allow clubs to enter scores via electronic scoring setting. Club Administrators do not have access to this setting.
Who can record scores in the Rugby eScoring app?
Club Administrators can record match events using the eScoring app once the Association Administrator has activated eScoring for the relevant competition grade.
What happens if I accidentally record the wrong score?
Recorded events can be removed from the event log. Removing an event will reverse the score and stat totals associated with it. For yellow cards, removing the card event will also immediately cancel the exclusion countdown for that player.
Does the yellow card countdown pause when I pause the match?
Yes. The exclusion countdown is synchronised with the match clock. It pauses when you pause the match and resumes automatically when play continues.
Can I assign events to a yellow-carded player?
Yes, but the system will warn you. Yellow-carded players are removed from the standard scoring flow during their exclusion period to prevent accidental assignments, but you can still override this if needed.
Can I assign events to a red-carded player?
No. Players who have received a red card cannot be assigned any further events for the remainder of the match.
Where do I configure yellow card exclusion times?
Exclusion times are set in your competition's Game Settings. Contact your Association Administrator if you need these adjusted.
Do these updates affect historical match data?
No. All previously recorded match data remains unchanged. Updates to the eScoring interface apply only to matches scored after the update.
