Overview

Basketball England uses PlayHQ as their registration platform, which means all new memberships and renewals must be completed through PlayHQ.

Registration must be completed through your club or local league's PlayHQ registration link, with your Basketball England membership automatically included in the process.

All verification requirements are integrated into the registration flow, with most checks happening instantly and approved verifications carrying forward to future seasons.

What's included?

  • Rolling 12-Month Memberships: Your Basketball England membership is valid for 12 months from your registration date and automatically covers your entire season participation - ensuring full value and coverage for pre-season activities.
  • Automatic Eligibility Verification: PlayHQ automatically checks your membership covers the entire season when you register for competitions. If not, you'll be prompted to purchase an extension that adds time to your existing membership.
  • Built-in Compliance: You cannot be added to teams, lineups, or competitions without the appropriate eligibility and membership. This prevents rule breaches and ensures all participants meet Basketball England requirements.

What you'll need before starting

Before getting started, ensure you have:

  • Registration link from your club or local league - you can find the link to register on the Basketball England Website
  • Valid email address for account creation
  • Passport or identity document (for certain roles)
  • Access to your existing email if claiming a previous Basketball England profile

Step-by-step instructions

Creating your PlayHQ account

Once you click your club's registration link, you'll be taken to a page showing your club's details and branding. This is where you'll either create a new PlayHQ account or log in to an existing one.

  1. Access the registration portal
    1. Click the registration link provided by your club or local league
    2. You'll see your club's details and branding on the registration page
    3. If your local league isn't using PlayHQ, find the registration link on the Basketball England website or search for your organisation at https://www.playhq.com/uk/basketball-england/
  2. Set up your account
    1. Create a new PlayHQ account or log in if you already have one
      • Important for parents/guardians: Create the account in your own name as the primary account holder
    2. You'll add dependent details in the next step if registering someone else

Selecting participants and roles

Basketball England has different membership requirements for players, coaches, referees, and other roles.

  1. Choose your participant
    1. Select whether you're registering yourself or adding a new participant/dependent
    2. Enter the participant's details accordingly
    3. If claiming an existing Basketball England profile, you'll be prompted within the registration flow
  2. Select your role
    1. Choose the appropriate role: Player, Coach, Team Manager, Referee, or Volunteer
    2. Each role has specific verification requirements and documentation needs
    3. If you hold multiple roles, complete separate registrations for each role
  3. Set profile visibility
    1. PlayHQ offers public statistics and profile features that can enhance your basketball experience by tracking your games, statistics, and team history. However, you have full control over whether this
      information is publicly visible or kept private.
    2. Choose between public or private profile settings:
      • Public: Competition statistics, game times, playing history visible on playhq.com and the mobile app
      • Private: Information only visible to your club and Basketball England
    3. You can update this at any time through your account details

Completing verification requirements

Your verification needs depend on your selected role and previous Basketball England membership history.

  1. Identity verification (if required)
    1. Upload your passport through the secure Stripe Identity verification system
    2. This process takes only a few minutes and protects your data
    3. Required for certain roles if not previously verified by Basketball England
  2. Claiming existing profiles (if applicable)
    1. If you've registered with Basketball England before, you may be prompted to claim your existing profile. This will preserve your membership history and avoid duplicate verification processes.
    2. Matching uses your name, date of birth, and email address
    3. Claim using your existing email to preserve membership history and avoid duplicate verification
      • Can't access your old email? Contact the Basketball England team via membership@basketballengalnd.co.uk, and include your name, the previous email address you no longer have access to, as well as the name of the club you were last registered to. The team will then be able to resolve this issue manually for you.
  3. Additional requirements: For non playing roles in Basketball England, you may need to complete additional background checks or hold certain accreditations. These are automatically integrated into the registration process and will be processed in the background.
    1. DBS checks: Automatically prompted if required - registration remains pending until completed.
    2. Accreditations: All coaches, bench personnel, referees and table officials will need to have completed the child safeguarding requirements and appropriate accreditations as per Basketball England's rules.
    3. Participant Photo upload: Required to upload for your Basketball England membership card and participant verification.
    4. Non-UK Passport Holders: If required you may need to have your Visa verified by Basketball England. Log into you PlayHQ account, and enter your visa share code which you can find on the gov.uk website 

⚠️ Important: You cannot participate in any capacity without proper membership and all required verifications.

Finalising registration and payment

Complete your Basketball England membership by reviewing all the information you've provided, and paying any required fees.

  1. Review your information
    1. Check all participant details are correct
    2. Verify role selections and any additional requirements
    3. Set your profile visibility preferences (public or private statistics)
  2. Complete payment
    1. Pay Basketball England membership fees and any club fees
    2. Fees may include national membership, association registration, and club registration components
    3. Your registration is complete once payment is processed

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I need additional verification after registration? Most verifications happen instantly during registration, but some checks like DBS may take a few days. You'll show as "pending" until approved, and Basketball England will only contact you if additional verification is needed.

Can I register multiple roles at once? No, you need to complete separate registrations for each role (player, coach, official, etc.). Each role has specific requirements and verification processes.

What if I'm a non-UK passport holder? You must provide visa information during registration for Type 1/Type 2 visa membership eligibility. Post-registration, you'll need to provide your visa share code to Basketball England through your PlayHQ profile.

How do I access my digital membership card? Once registration is complete, download the Basketball England mobile app (available from late-August) to access your digital membership card for each role you're registered for.

Will my previous Basketball England membership history be preserved? Yes, existing member data has been migrated to PlayHQ. If you can claim your existing profile using your previous email, your membership history and approved verifications will be preserved.
