Listed below are common resumption options for associations to consider when resuming basketball post the COVID-19 suspension to play.
It may appear to be easier to just continue with a season (retain existing registrations) so that you don’t have to go through the registration process again. However, we advise that you consider the following very carefully before making that decision.
- A percentage of players may not immediately return to basketball due to health concerns, financial strain, or other reasons
- Players who registered in autumn/winter at the start of the pandemic might not be available to play at this time of year due to other commitments
- It’s likely that the make-up of already formed teams and grades from autumn/winter will change, thus rendering any completed grading/matches null and void
- Return to sport restrictions will likely mean that your competition/timeslot structure will need to be revamped
- Updated terms and conditions may need to be agreed upon by participants following any changes at your association in light of COVID-19
Rather than chasing up confirmation from all participants on whether they are returning, cancelling the registration of those who aren't, and revamping existing teams, grades and competition structure, it may be easier to start afresh in a new season with a clean slate.
Start afresh with a new season and new registrations
Part 1 – Configuration and registrations
- Create new season
- Setup and open registrations
- If required, setup process for players in credit from COVID-19 affected season
- Create and issue discount vouchers
- Alternatively, have a two-stage registration process:
- Configure a reduced price, hide the registration form from public view and provide a direct link for players who are in financial credit to register first within a specified time period
- Increase the price and show registration form to the public for new players to register
Part 2 – Fixturing
Continue with an existing season and retain registrations
Part 1 – Configuration and registrations
- Change season name and dates
- Will need to ensure that registration windows on forms at association and club levels aren’t outside of 6 months from the altered season start date
- Setup and open/continue registrations where applicable
- Cancel refunded or discontinued participant registrations (if required)
Part 2 – Fixturing
If the season hadn't as yet been fixtured
If the season had been fixtured but games hadn't as yet been played
or
If games had been played but results are to be scrapped
