Understanding Multi-Factor Authentication
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your PlayHQ administrator account, better protecting the personal information of participants across PlayHQ. It’s also referred to as ‘two-factor authentication’ or ‘2FA’.
With MFA enabled, you'll need two things to access your account:
- Your password
- A verification code from your mobile device (via SMS or an Authenticator App)
Current Availability
This feature is not yet available to all administrators across PlayHQ. Please contact your sport's support team to find out when this may be an option to switch on for your administrator account.
Setting up MFA on your account
PlayHQ offers two methods for Multi-Factor Authentication:
- Authentication App - generates time-based codes on your smartphone that refresh every 30 seconds.
- SMS Verification - receive a unique code to your mobile phone via text message each time you log in.
Steps to enable MFA
-
Access Your Account Settings
Login to your administrator account in the Admin Portal. Click on your account details in the bottom left-hand corner and select Account.
-
Navigate to Security settings
Switch to the Security tab. Click Set up Multi-Factor Authentication.
-
Choose your MFA method
Select either Authentication App or SMS as your preferred method.
Setting up your MFA method
Follow the steps below for your chosen MFA method:
-
Download an Authentication App
If you don't already have one, download and install one of these authentication apps on your mobile device:
-
Scan the QR Code
Open your authentication app and scan the QR code displayed on your screen. If you can't scan the QR code, you can manually enter the text code shown below it.
-
Enter the Verification Code
Your authentication app will generate a 6-digit code. Enter this code in the verification field and click Submit.
-
Complete Setup
You'll be signed out automatically. When you log back in, you'll need to enter your password and the current 6-digit code from your authentication app.
About Authentication App Codes
The 6-digit security codes in your authentication app automatically refresh every 30 seconds. Always use the current code displayed in the app when logging in.
-
Enter Your Mobile Number
Select your country code (AUS or NZ) and enter your mobile phone number. If this option is unavailable, please proceed with using the Authentication App method.
-
Request Verification Code
Click Send Code. You'll receive a 6-digit code via SMS.
-
Enter the Verification Code
Enter the 6-digit code from the SMS, then click Submit.
-
Complete Setup
You'll be signed out automatically. When you log back in, you'll need to enter your password and the new SMS code sent to your mobile phone number.
SMS Code Timeout
SMS verification codes are only valid for a limited time. If the code expires or you don't receive it, click Resend a new code to request a fresh code.
Resetting or changing your MFA method
You may need to reset your MFA settings in these situations:
- You got a new phone
- You lost access to your authentication app
- You changed your mobile number
At any point you can switch from using the authentication app to the SMS method of multi-factor authentication (MFA), as well as the other way around. To change between MFA methods, return to the Security tab in your account details section of the Admin Portal.
Need Help?
If you need to reset your MFA, please contact your sport's support team. They can reset the MFA settings for your administrator account, allowing you to set it up again.
